starless

Sundown dazzling day
Gold through my eyes
But my eyes turned within
Only see
Starless and bible black

Ice blue silver sky
Fades into grey
To a grey hope that oh yearns to be
Starless and bible black

Old friend charity
Cruel twisted smile
And the smile signals emptiness
For me
Starless and bible black

Big Shot

I am the Big Shot.
You heard me right the first time.

Name of bachelor Johnny Cool.

Occupation: Big Shot.

Occupation at the moment: just having fun. What a party that was – the drinks were loaded and so were the dolls.

I narrowed my eyes and poured a stiff Manhattan. Then I saw… Hotsie. What a dame. A big, bountiful babe in the region of 48-23-38. One hell of a region. She had the hottest lips since Hiroshima: I had to stand back for fear of being burned. Whiskey wow wow. I breathed. She was dressed as before the bed. In that kind of outfit she could get rolled at night… and I don’t mean on a crap table.

It’s kind of revealing, isn’t it? Revealing? It’s positively risqu – I like it. She said: “You’re a man with a thousand Gs, right?”
“A thousand what?” I quipped. “G-men, girls, guns, guts.”
“You’re my type.”
“Wrong, baby” I slapped her hard. “I’m a `L’ man: strictly liquor, love and laughs.”

She stared over my shoulder: “Play it cool, Johnny.” Play it what? I flipped. “Listen, I fought my way up from tough East Side New York. Lead-filled saps and sub-machine guns, like this.”

She said: “Johnny, this is a deadly game, have a few laughs and go home.” I shuddered. Normally I pack a rod in pajamas – I carry nothing but scars from Normandy beach. I said “Wrong, baby, you can’t fool me.” She spat playfully. “I’m ahead of you, Johnny.” I studied the swell of her enormous boobs and said: “Baby, you’re so far ahead it’s beautiful.”

“You, you are, you are eccentric, I like that.”
“Electric cheri, bonked off my, tout comprende?” We spoke French fluently. Our lips met again and again. “Yeah, yeah yeah” I slobbered. Hotsie said: “You’re slobbering all over the seat, kid.”

I went home late. Very late. What could I say to my wife, “Darling I’ve been beatin’ up again”? Let’s face it she’s credulous as hell.

“A punk stopped me on the street, he said you got a light, Mac?”

“No but i’ve got a dark overcoat.”

Scranton Gangster – Revisited

It has come to my attention that the original Scranton Gangster (sometimes known as “Scranton Anthem” or “Steamtown”) is no longer available at its original site…

So I have decided to host it honor of the original by MO7s, who were made up by Mike Beberich, Kevin O’Boyle, with John Siddons.

The Scranton Anthem (mp3)

Lyrics as transcribed by me:

Ya’ll listen up to my man Mike Beberich… comin’ live atchoo! Holla at me son!
Once upon a time there was a ravin’ and rantin’
Boy form the itty-bitty shitty City of Scranton
Who had a tendency for leavin’ emcees pantin’
With the quickness, witness the reckless abandon
Nobody ever knows what the fuck I’m sayin’
And my flows…
{incoherent}
Hey Kevin, yo
Lay the synth line down
Because hate it or love it, man, this is my hometown
From up the Eynon to down by the U
The place where good times are far between and few
But we do what we can with a bowl in our hand [inhaling]
God damn – feels good to be back, man
In a city of empty minds and trains that just don’t run
But oh what fun
Just driving past all these dead buildings
Drinkin’, smokin’, brain cell killin’, just chillin’
Even though there ain’t no hot spot
No-one’s got money
Our city was the bomb back in 1920
Now the heroin and pot rules[?] are exquisite
Scranton: you wouldn’t want to live here or visit

But I’m a Scranton gangsta
I can’t afford a gun, but I’ll still shank ya’
My words will fuck you up much quicker than the {?} can
24’s spinnin’ on a busted-ass mini-van
Yeah, I’m a Scranton gangsta
I can’t afford a knife, but I’ll still try to shank ya’
My words will fuck you up much quicker than the {?} can
24’s spinnin’ on a busted-ass mini-van

I’m back and I’m rappin’ like my ass is on crack
Can escape to New York City but they keep holding me back
And while I’m here I might as well write my city an anthem
It’s not pronounced Scran-TON, bitch, this is Scrant-UN
The motherfuckin’ place that made me
Memories of gettin’ fucked up on Parade Day
{?} I’ll flow about it until my brains is empty
The first two initials of my name is M.C.
The envy of absolutely no one
It’s no fun chillin’ in Pine Brook with single moms
And chillin’ in the hills making a swag weed purchase
Drug…{?} Minooka…
Where there’s twice as many bars as there are churches
To Green Ridge, where you any got no business if you ain’t rich
Down to Lackawanna Avenue, pick up a bitch [hey baby]
90% of our citizens are 90 years or older
We got a nine month wind that keeps getting colder
So much to say, nothing to do at all except for chillin’ our 15 year old new mall
[?]So that’s all I gotta say Fuck L.A. and BeanTown, this here is my dream town Bitch, Welcome to Steamtown!

But I’m a Scranton gangsta
I can’t afford a gun, but I’ll still shank ya’
My words will fuck you up much quicker than the {?} can
24’s spinnin’ on a busted-ass mini-van
Yeah, I’m a Scranton gangsta
I can’t afford a knife, but I’ll still try to shank ya’
My words will fuck you up much quicker than the {?} can
24’s spinnin’ on a busted-ass mini-van

the new WJJZ / death of the HAWK

in case you missed it WJJZ is back…sorta

Greater Media has announced the talent line up for its Smooth Jazz/WJJZ Philadelphia, and while the morning show has yet to be finalized, afternoons will be hosted by Grammy-nominated sax star Dave Koz.

The lineup to date includes Music Director Margo Marano overnights, PD Michael Tozzi handling middays and Koz driving Philly Jazz fans home weekday afternoons, 3PM – 7PM. Weekend afternoons will be hosted by Gerald Veasley with Teri Webb doing Saturday 10AM – 3PM and swing shifts.

“We’re thrilled to have some old friends join us for the re-launch of Smooth Jazz in Philadelphia at its new address at 97.5,” said Tozzi. “We’ve brought back the familiar voices of Teri Webb and smooth jazz bassist, Gerald Veasley for weekends, and enlisted saxophonist Dave Koz to handle the smooth ride home weekdays for WJJZ.”

The Death of Philly Jazz WJJZ

Philly Flips A Pair
Aug. 10, 2006
By Keith Berman

We’ve been rumoring this one for a few days now, and things happened almost exactly as we said they would: Clear Channel/Philadelphia has flipped smooth jazz WJJZ and AC WSNI (Sunny 104.5). WJJZ is now “Philly’s 106.1” with Clear Channel’s “Wake Up With Whoopi” slated to launch in mornings on Monday (Aug. 14). R&R’s Street Talk Daily uncovered the domain www.phillys1061.com earlier this week, and the site is now active with a splash page touting Whoopi’s show.

The two stations are currently simulcasting and kicked off their new formats with “start”- themed songs like The Black Eyed Peas’ “Let’s Get It Started,” Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Something” and 2 Unlimited’s “Get Ready for This.” At press time, things looked to be leaning towards Rhythmic AC — also as Street Talk Daily predicted — with tracks airing by KT Tunstall, Blondie, Nina Sky, and LaBelle. It’s not known how long the stations will simulcast and whether this will be the final format for 106.1, but rumors are still circulating that 104.5 will go alternative.

WSNI and WJJZ both ended their runs with farewell-themed tracks: WJJZ’s swan song was Hall & Oates’ “She’s Gone,” and Sunny signed off with Elton John’s “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.”

–Updated 8/28/06–

Smooth Jazz is back – in a way. Clear Channel Radio, which killed the format on 106.1 on Aug. 10, has started streaming the old station’s music on the Internet (accessible through www.wjjz.com, though on Friday it was still labeled “straight jazz”) and over the air on 106.1’s secondary channel on HD radio (for which you need a special radio). WJJZ’s longtime music director, Frank Childs, is voicing the station. No other company seems likely to pick up Smooth Jazz for a conventional FM station here.
