The Fiery Furnaces – Philadelphia

Eleanor and I exchanged looks all night long. Little did I realize that Alex Kapranos was standing behind me, maybe she was looking at him. But in my head we made a connection. When she sang: Bleak church on a cold tundra / Mountain glacier glacier glacier stream / Black stone beach and a black death bottle / Is all me and my baby’ll need, I could tell she was talking to me.

Don’t worry El, we can get together after your next tour.

P.S.: Matt, I won’t let anyone know about how much you rip off Jimmy Page.

A Leonard Cohen Afterworld?

I’m on my time with everyone
I have very bad posture

Sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea
Distill the life that’s inside of me
Sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea
I’m anemic royalty

Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld
So I can sigh eternally
I’m so tired I can’t sleep
I’m a liar and a thief

Sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea
I’m anemic royalty

I’m on warm milk and laxatives
Cherry-flavored antacids

Sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea
Distill the life that’s inside of me
Sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea
I’m anemic royalty

Bill Owens – Photographer

I learned about this guy in a college course on the history of photography.
He pretty much escaped my mind until I found his website (while searching the woodcarver by the same name). His poor website signficantly understates his talent, but you should check out his available images at www.billowens.com and at Greg Kucera Gallery.

These images come from “Suburbia” and are owned by Bill Owens.

i really miss gene wilder

I really miss Gene Wilder, not that he’s dead or anything.
He was a really funny guy. He hasn’t done a movie 15 years.
I mean really. I have no real affinity towards Willie Wonka (new or old) and the remake hasnt sparked my interest, but I thought i might re-spark his career.

I watched The Producers last night for the first time – quite a funny movie. He was hilarious. I started rolling back through the abyss of my favorite Wilder movies: Silver Streak, See No Evil, Here No Evil, Stir Crazy, The Frisco Kid… but nothing topped him with Mel Brooks: Blazing Saddles, The Producers, and Young Frankenstein.

Seriously what happened? Where are you, Gene?

Tell Mel Brooks to get back to directing… he hasen’t done anythnig since:

T. Rex – Born To Boogie (DVD)

born to boogie t. rex marc bolan
“some people like to rock, some people like to roll”

i didn’t know ringo starr directed this, therefore i accept the blame in being excited about renting this. well i’ll start off by saying this movie really demystifies [tag]marc bolan[/tag] and [tag]t. rex[/tag] – big mistake. they’re are not half as interesting as i expected.

the average age of fan at t.rex concert in 1972: twelve.

marc bolan is no more appealing than arlo guthrie in alice’s restaurant. not even his mad hatter hat is slightly humouros – just strange.

basically the “born to boogie” portion of the dvd is bullshit.

songlist: children of the revolution (w/ ringo and elton john): elton slamming ivorys with marc bolan’s head sticking out of the piano
spaceball ricochet (solo acoustic)(man this song is terrible)
Telegram Sam

Cosmic Dancer (solo acoustic) put me to sleep

man in a bear suit, 3 nuns, violinists on a picnic becomes a half-decent version of Jeepster… rolls into Bang A Gong

(smog) – Northstar Bar, Philly

pre-opener: Be Careful Little Hands – sounds like a softer Interpol, obviously not as good, not bad though.

opener: [tag]Feathers[/tag] – vermont folk waste of time. 7 member band with 20+ instruments providing sitar squeals and drum banging. Really, really not good.
Songs about killing white horses, and a mythical Canadian buffalo. Avoid if possible.

[tag](SMOG)[/tag]
Opened with 4 new songs off of A River Ain’t Too Much To Love and followed suit with acoustified (i mean relatively) versions of some popular tracks. [tag]Bill Callahan[/tag] looked his stoic self with some stepping out dance moves, waddles, squats, and over strained Elvis facial impersentations. All in all a good time. I will say that it was a bit disappointing hearing some songs simplified. I actually wished they played two more songs off ARATM, namely “The Well” & “Running The Loping”. I don’t know who the drummer is but he was tight as hell. Bill Gates played guitar as well.

    Approximate Setlist:

Say Valley Maker
I Feel Like The Mother of The World
Rock Bottom Riser
Let Me See The Colts
In The Pines
Cold Discovery
Dress Sexy At My Funeral
Justice Aversion
Vessel In Vain
Let’s Move To The Country
Cold Blooded Old Times (ending with Feathers joining on stage for a cacophonic nightmare)
