In 1992, I had a pretty good grasp of black culture and the urban racial issues being brought out by the Rodney King trial. Being that there were about 6 black people in Scranton, I had to feed my mind with MTV and Naughty By Nature Lyrics.
If you ain’t never been to the ghetto
Don’t ever come to the ghetto
‘Cause you wouldn’t understand the ghetto
So stay the fuck out of the ghetto
Why me? Why me?
My class took a field trip to Philadelphia where I was thrilled to finally see real black people. Some of my friends bought “X” hats which were popular with the the release of Spike Lee’s Malcolm X. I remember regretting not getting one – they’d never have these in Scranton!
